Stellenbosch

South Africa's premier wine district sits just 50 km from Cape Town, where mountain slopes meet cooling Atlantic and False Bay breezes. Stellenbosch excels at Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends, and old-vine Chenin Blanc — a post-apartheid wine renaissance in full swing.

Origin & History

Stellenbosch was founded in 1679, making it South Africa's second-oldest European settlement. Governor Simon van der Stel recognized the valley's wine potential, planting the first vineyards. The apartheid era isolated South African wine, but since democracy in 1994, Stellenbosch has rapidly emerged on the world stage. Today, it leads the Cape Winelands in quality, education (home to Stellenbosch University's viticulture department), and innovation.

Terroir & Climate

Stellenbosch benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by the False Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Elevations range from 100m valley floors to 600m mountain slopes on the Helderberg, Simonsberg, and Stellenbosch Mountain. Decomposed granite (particularly on Helderberg) produces structured reds. Table Mountain sandstone and Malmesbury shale add diversity. The region receives cooling afternoon breezes from both oceans, extending the growing season.

Key Appellations

Stellenbosch's wards (sub-regions) include Helderberg, famed for Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional elegance on granite slopes. Simonsberg-Stellenbosch produces powerful reds and fine whites. Bottelary Hills excels with old-vine bush-trained wines. Banghoek and Jonkershoek Valley offer cooler, mountain-influenced terroir. Devon Valley provides warmer sites for concentrated reds.
