Willamette Valley

Oregon's answer to Burgundy. The Willamette Valley's volcanic Jory soils, cool climate, and terroir-obsessed winemakers produce Pinot Noir that regularly outscores its French counterparts in blind tastings. Burgundy's Drouhin family planted here in 1987 — that says it all.

Origin & History

David Lett of The Eyrie Vineyards planted Oregon's first Pinot Noir vines in the Willamette Valley in 1965, against conventional wisdom that the region was too cool. When his 1975 Pinot Noir placed among top Burgundies in a 1979 blind tasting, it validated Oregon's potential. Burgundian investment followed—most notably Robert Drouhin's establishment of Domaine Drouhin Oregon in 1987—and today the valley hosts over 700 wineries.

Terroir & Climate

The Willamette Valley sits between the Coast Range and the Cascade Mountains, creating a cool, marine-influenced climate with long, dry summers and ample rainfall in winter. Volcanic Jory soils (iron-rich, reddish clay) in the Dundee Hills produce rich, earthy Pinot Noir. Marine sedimentary soils in the Eola-Amity Hills and Ribbon Ridge yield more floral, structured wines. Elevation ranges from 60 to 300 meters.

Key Appellations

The Dundee Hills, the valley's most famous sub-AVA, produces generous, fruit-forward Pinot Noir on volcanic soils. Eola-Amity Hills, exposed to the Van Duzer corridor winds, yields taut, mineral wines. Ribbon Ridge is the smallest AVA, known for finesse and elegance. Chehalem Mountains offer diverse soils and styles. McMinnville and Yamhill-Carlton complete the six nested AVAs, each with distinct character.
