Origin & History

Sonoma's wine history predates Napa's, with Franciscan missionaries planting the first vines at the Sonoma Mission in 1812. Agoston Haraszthy, the "Father of California Viticulture," established Buena Vista Winery in 1857. While Napa captured global headlines, Sonoma quietly built a reputation for diversity, sustainability, and farm-to-table culture that increasingly attracts serious wine enthusiasts.

Terroir & Climate

Sonoma's geography spans from the Pacific coastline to inland valleys, creating dramatic temperature gradients. The Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley are directly influenced by Pacific fog, producing outstanding cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley further inland enjoy warmer conditions ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Petaluma Gap is one of America's windiest AVAs, creating unique growing conditions.

Key Appellations

Russian River Valley is celebrated for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of Burgundian quality. Sonoma Coast, encompassing the fog-influenced hills, produces structured, mineral-driven wines. Alexander Valley rivals Napa for Cabernet Sauvignon. Dry Creek Valley is Zinfandel's spiritual American home, with old-vine plantings dating to the 1880s. Bennett Valley and Moon Mountain add further dimension.
