Tokaj

Louis XIV called it 'the wine of kings, the king of wines.' Tokaj's botrytis-affected Furmint and Hárslevelű have produced the world's most historic sweet wine since the 1600s. Today, bone-dry Furmint is leading a remarkable Hungarian wine renaissance.

Origin & History

Tokaj's sweet wines were the first to use botrytized (noble rot) grapes, with documented production dating to 1571—predating Sauternes by over a century. The region was classified in 1737, making it the world's first officially classified wine region. Under communism, state-controlled cooperatives diminished quality, but since 1990, investment by families like the Szepsy dynasty and international players like Royal Tokaji has restored Tokaj to its historical glory.

Terroir & Climate

Tokaj sits at the confluence of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, whose autumn mists create ideal conditions for botrytis (noble rot). The continental climate features cold winters and warm summers, with volcanic soils of rhyolite, andesite, and loess providing excellent drainage. Underground cellars carved into volcanic tuff maintain constant cool temperatures and high humidity, coated in the beneficial mold Cladosporium cellare that aids aging.

Key Appellations

Tokaji Aszú, the flagship sweet wine, is classified by puttonyos (historically 3–6, now minimum 5), indicating sweetness level. Tokaji Eszencia, the rarest, is made from free-run juice of botrytized berries and can age for centuries. Szamorodni ("as it comes") blends botrytized and clean grapes. The growing dry Furmint movement produces ageworthy whites with razor acidity and mineral depth, drawing comparisons to Riesling and Chablis.
