Origin & History

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest cultivated red grape varieties, with origins traced to the Basque region of southwestern France. DNA analysis revealed it as a parent of both Cabernet Sauvignon (crossed with Sauvignon Blanc) and Merlot, making it one of the most genetically important grapes in the world. While it plays a supporting role in Bordeaux blends, the Loire Valley has championed it as a standalone variety for centuries, particularly in the appellations of Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saumur-Champigny.

Growing Regions

The Loire Valley is the spiritual home of pure Cabernet Franc, where the cool climate preserves its signature aromatics and bright acidity. In Bordeaux, it is essential to Right Bank blends in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol — Château Cheval Blanc famously relies on it. Northern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige produce crisp, herbal expressions. Argentina's Mendoza and Canada's Niagara Peninsula have emerged as exciting New World regions, while Virginia in the United States is building a reputation for the variety.

Wine Characteristics

Cabernet Franc wines are typically medium-bodied with moderate tannins softer than Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a bright ruby-garnet. Signature aromas include raspberry, red currant, violet, and a distinctive graphite-pencil note. Herbal characters — green bell pepper, dried sage, and tobacco leaf — emerge especially in cooler vintages. On the palate, the wine shows juicy acidity, silky tannins, and a mineral-driven finish. Loire examples are typically unoaked or lightly oaked, while Bordeaux versions gain richness from new barrels.

Food Pairings

Cabernet Franc's moderate weight and herbal complexity make it supremely food-friendly. Roasted poultry — especially duck and guinea fowl — is a classic match. Loire rillettes and rillons (pork preparations) are traditional companions. Grilled vegetables, particularly bell peppers and eggplant, echo the wine's herbal notes. Goat cheese from the Loire (Sainte-Maure, Valençay) creates a perfect regional pairing.
