Premier Cru

Premier Cru ('first growth') is the second-highest vineyard classification in Burgundy, designating excellent vineyard sites that sit just below Grand Cru. In Bordeaux, confusingly, Premier Cru is the highest classification, referring to the top five estates of the 1855 Classification.

Premier Cru in Burgundy

Burgundy has over 600 Premier Cru vineyards (called climats), producing wines that combine village character with superior terroir quality. Key facts:

  • Labelling — village name + vineyard name (e.g., "Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers")
  • Yields — slightly higher than Grand Cru but still restricted
  • Quality — many Premier Crus rival Grand Crus in quality, often at 1/3 the price

Premier Cru in Bordeaux

The 1855 Classification designated 5 Premier Cru (First Growth) estates:

  1. Château Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac)
  2. Château Latour (Pauillac)
  3. Château Mouton Rothschild (Pauillac — promoted in 1973)
  4. Château Margaux (Margaux)
  5. Château Haut-Brion (Pessac-Léognan)

Value Proposition

Burgundy Premier Cru wines represent arguably the best value in fine wine. They offer terroir-specific character, aging potential, and complexity at prices significantly below Grand Cru — though still ranging from €30 to €300+ depending on the village and producer.
