Origin & History

Tuscany's winemaking predates the Roman Empire, with Etruscan viticulture documented as early as the 8th century BC. Chianti was formally defined as a wine region in 1716 by Cosimo III de' Medici, making it one of the world's oldest appellations. The Super Tuscan revolution of the 1970s, led by Sassicaia and Tignanello, broke with tradition by introducing Cabernet Sauvignon and French oak, creating a new category of world-class Italian wine.

Terroir & Climate

Tuscany's Mediterranean climate provides warm, dry summers and mild winters, though altitude and coastal breezes create significant variation. Chianti Classico's hills between Florence and Siena sit at 250–600 meters, with galestro (chalky clay) and alberese (limestone) soils. Montalcino's warmer, lower-altitude terrain produces richer, more concentrated wines. The coastal Maremma and Bolgheri benefit from sea breezes and gravelly soils.

Key Appellations

Chianti Classico, the historic heart between Florence and Siena, produces structured Sangiovese with elegance. Brunello di Montalcino demands 100% Sangiovese Grosso and extended aging, producing some of Italy's most age-worthy wines. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano offers a balance of quality and value. Bolgheri, on the Tyrrhenian coast, is home to Super Tuscans. Vernaccia di San Gimignano produces distinctive white wines.
