Origin & History
Sangiovese is native to central Italy, most likely originating in Tuscany or possibly Calabria—the name may derive from Sanguis Jovis (blood of Jupiter). Genetic studies confirm it is a natural cross between Ciliegiolo and Calabrese Montenuovo. By the 18th century, it had become the dominant variety of Tuscany, and the 20th century saw its rise to international fame through the global success of Chianti and, later, Brunello di Montalcino. The 1970s "Super Tuscan" movement blended Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, creating wines that shook the Italian establishment.
Growing Regions
Tuscany is the unrivaled home of Sangiovese in all its expressions. Montalcino, the heartland of Brunello, produces the most age-worthy single-varietal examples. Chianti Classico—between Florence and Siena—covers a vast area of varied quality. Montepulciano's Vino Nobile offers another distinguished expression. Sangiovese is also grown extensively in Umbria (Montefalco Rosso), Emilia-Romagna, and in smaller quantities in California and Australia.
Wine Characteristics
Sangiovese wines range from pale ruby to garnet with distinct terracotta highlights. The nose is unmistakably Italian: tart cherry, plum, tomato, dried violets, and earthy mineral notes. High acidity is a hallmark—giving the wine wonderful energy—alongside firm, grippy tannins and a long, savory finish. With age, the wine develops leather, tobacco, dried cherry, and truffle complexity. The best Brunellos can age for 30 or more years.
Food Pairings
Sangiovese's high acidity makes it one of the world's great food wines. Tomato-based pasta dishes—Bolognese, Amatriciana, wild boar ragù—are classics. Bistecca Fiorentina (Florentine T-bone) is the legendary match. Grilled porcini mushrooms, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, and ribollita (Tuscan bread soup) are equally at home. The wine's acidity cuts through rich cheese and fatty meats.
